A suitable backdrop can help stimulate the photographer's inspiration and creativity. How to choose the best material of the backdrop is extremely important. The following is a brief introduction to the common backdrop material.
Vinyl
The vinyl material is very durable and can be used as a backdrop or floor mat background. It can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, very suitable for cake smash. If you are looking for birthday cake backdrop, this may be a good choice. However, glare is prone to appear on this material backdrop, therefore, when shooting and in a darker environment, you need to adjust the light. Besides, the printed color is not as good as other materials.
Poly Paper
Poly paper is a synthetic coated paper that is difficult to tear, and is inexpensive, bright in color, and glare free. It is much lighter than vinyl, canvas, and fabric, and it can be hung from the background frame with a clip or taped to the wall. Unlike vinyl, poly paper is not recommended for cake smashing because it cannot be wiped clean. When using this material backdrops, do not fold, wash, wipe clean or use any liquid in the backdrop.
Canvas
The canvas backdrop is made of strong cloth (similar to canvas printing), and the printing is very vivid and glare free. The canvas can be used as a backdrop or as a floor. Canvas background cloth can be hung. It is lighter than vinyl, cannot be wiped clean, easy to wrinkle, and may be more expensive than vinyl poly paper backdrops.
Polyester Fabric
Polyester fabric has high strength and elasticity, so they are durable and wrinkle resistant. Sturdy, tear-resistant, the material of the fabric itself determines that it is not malleable, will not deform, and maintain its flatness for a long time. But this material is easy to generate static electricity and attract dust, easy to form holes when encountering soot and sparks.
Cotton Cloth
Cotton material is characterized with soft touch, soft luster, durable, bright color, clear printing, and washable. But it is easy to wrinkle, and the wrinkles are not easy to smooth. Besides, this material backdrops are easy to shrink after washing, lack of elasticity, and easy to deform.
Muslin
Muslin material is a great choice for backdrop. Most of them are washable. This material is stiffer than other styles. Our backdrops material is exactly muslin, featuring printed bright colors, light weight, glare free, foldable and no crease. You can iron them with low temperature or throw them in the washer and dryer to get rid of creases. Cleaning is easy.
After understanding the pros and cons of various materials, it is necessary to consider the location and subject of shooting. For example, when shooting outdoors, try to choose a heavier backdrop to avoid being blown away by the wind. If you are indoors, choose a lighter background cloth, the best is without wrinkles, which can reduce post-processing work. For portrait photography, canvas or muslin is a good choice. It can stay flat and looks gorgeous. But muslin backdrop is cost-effective. For pet photography, the microfiber backdrop works well. It feels soft, like fleece and is easy to carry. The color is vibrant and it looks realistic. Besides, wrinkle removal is easy. For cake smash photography, vinyl backdrops are more suitable than other materials, because they can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
